Webnet on the rooftop
The building on 100 East End Avenue, opposite Carl Schurz Park, New York is home to Chapin School. The rich educational tradition of this institution dates back to 1901, when Maria Bowen Chapin founded this school, grades Kindergarten through Class 12.
To cater for all the needs of the students, in 2021 they opened the upper floors and new uses were given to some spaces: a regulation-size gymnasium, a suspended running tack, a rooftop play turf, an athetic training center, a dance studio, locker rooms, team meetings spaces and more.
The rooftop, called Rooftop Play Turf, serves as a multi-purpose space where students in all three divisions participate in Physical Education classes or student-athletes (in Classes 5-8) can practice and engage in small-sided competitions. The Rooftop Play Turf also features a climbing wall and a long jump pit.
To guarantee the safety of the students and to prevent the fall of sport equipment without blocking the sunlight, Webnet by Jakob Ropes System has been used.
WEBNET is a wire mesh fabricated out of 316 stainless Steel strands. The properties of the materials used provide high resistance to impact and low maintenance costs.
For this Project, Webnet micro 2mm cable and 80 mm diamond opening was selected which allows students to use this space freely. Due to Webnet’s transparency, it was ideal for an installation on a rooftop park in NY with impressive views, which was the intention of the designers of the Rooftop Play Turf.
The flexibility of use, the simplicity of installation and the light weight of the Jakob Webnet have allowed the design of a simple and light metallic structure which did not affect the existing building structure.
