Webnet Facade: Where Art and Safety Intersect at a New Parking Lot

A Fusion of Functionality and Aesthetics
In the bustling city of Sydney, the new parking lot at Liverpool Hospital stands as a beacon of innovative design, where Jakob Rope Systems’ Webnet facade marries art with safety. This project, a collaboration with our Australian partner Tensile Design & Construct, is a testament to our commitment to integrating functional safety solutions with artistic expression.

The Challenge: Safety Meets Art
The initial challenge was to design a facade for a multi-story parking garage that met safety standards and resonated with the community’s spirit. The architects from Fitzpatrick Partners envisioned a structure that would use Webnet as a supporting structure for an art installation by Bibi Barba, a renowned artist.

A Mosaic of Community and Harmony
The facade features over 1800 individual parts, arranged in a mosaic pattern across the structure. These circular petals, a creation of Bibi Barba, symbolize the unity of the community. The chosen colors reflect themes of peace, harmony, and cultural identity, making the parking lot more than just a functional space – it’s a canvas that tells a story.

Technical Mastery and Collaborative Spirit
Our partner, Tensile Design & Construct, worked closely with clients, architects, and artists to bring this vision to life. The project involved the installation of 6500 square meters of Webnet, manufactured by Jakob Rope Systems, and supported by stainless steel ropes. This robust safety barrier ensures top-tier security and maintains an aesthetic appeal with its virtually transparent nature.

Advantages of the Webnet Facade
The Webnet facade serves multiple purposes. It acts as a load-bearing structure for both greenery and artistic elements. With an open facade area of over 90%, it allows for natural ventilation, making an expensive air exchange system unnecessary. The installation process, completed in just four weeks, highlights our commitment to efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, the Webnet facade requires relatively low maintenance, ensuring its longevity and enduring appeal.

A New Benchmark in Architectural Design
This project at Liverpool Hospital’s parking lot sets a new benchmark in architectural design. It demonstrates how safety barriers can be more than just functional; they can be transformative, turning ordinary spaces into landmarks of art and community.
